Sunsetclaw is born to Olivesnail and Adderthorn alongside Riverdaze, Brightfire, and Snapglory. Her father is exiled from the clan by the time she is born. Two weeks later, her cousin Sedgeclaw is born. Sunsetkit and Sedgekit were best friends.

Eventually, a drought spirals into a deadly famine. A few moons later, Sunsetclaw and Goldenleaf decide to have kits to repopulate the clan. However, one is stillborn. There are two alive kits, but one of them was murdered by Volesmile...
