Icekit is born to Silverfang and Feathermoth of MistClan along with her siblings Mallowkit, Cloudedkit, and Patchkit - the story is set around five moons after their birth. She is depicted as adventurous and mischievous, as she decides to sneak out of her nest and visit the clan leader, Swiftstar. She is shortly afterwards caught by Tawnyflight, the deputy of MistClan, who scolds her for disturbing the sleeping leader. Her father, Silverfang, happened to be awake at that time. Upon hearing their voices, he wanted to know what was happening; after Tawnyflight explained, Silverfang chastises her gently while he is escorting her back to the nursery. Icekit asks worriedly if he would tell Feathermoth, and he assured her that he would not, since she was too young and it was normal for her to regularly make mistakes. As they pass the apprentices' den, Ravenpaw, a young tom who was made an apprentice half a moon ago, eyed her curiously.
The next morning, Sunwhisker, a queen, had kitted. Parsleytail, her mate, was attempting to control the huge mass of cats who were crowding into the nursery to meet the new arrivals. Sunwhisker, in turn, also commands everyone to calm down, since all the noise would possibly frighten the kits. She announces that the she-kit was Honeykit, and the tom was Barkkit. Icekit's sister, Cloudedkit, exclaimed that she was taking them out of the nursery to explore the camp, and Feathermoth casts her a warning glance, suggesting that Honeykit and Barkkit are far to young to engage in such activities. Feathermoth remarks wistfully that it was almost time Swiftstar made them apprentices since it was only a quarter moon since they turned six months old.
The next chapter skips to the point where the kits are six moons old, and Swiftstar calls the apprentice ritual. Ravenpaw congratulates Icekit as she is about to step up to recieve her apprentice name. He questions if she is excited, and she replies that she is elated. Icekit, Mallowkit, Cloudedkit and Patchkit are made apprentices in turn, and Swiftstar apprentices Icepaw to Mossflank, a tortoiseshell she-cat.
