His apprentice is said to be Burrpaw during the end of the prologue. It also explains his entire kin, his mate Scorchwing and his five kits. Later, Spiketail, one of his sons, takes him on a patrol with him and Violetheart. That is mentioned, at least. Heronwing then is brought back murdered. However, Spiketail thinks just injured. But Scorchwing, Heronwing's mate, realizes he is dead and is full of grief. Later he is seen in one of Dovekit's dreams.
